Wizards of the Coast has revised the reprint policy regarding Magic: the Gathering cards on the Reserved List yet again. Only a month ago Masticore was confirmed to be reprinted in From the Vault: Relics along with the popular card Living Death (not on the reserved list) in Duel Decks: Phyrexia Vs. The Coalition.
Apparently due to negative feedback the recent change has been reversed. Additionally, the foil loophole that has allowed judge foils to be printed is ending too.
Aaron Forsythe tweeted “Hasbro was not a factor in anything.” Mark Rosewater said in a twitter post “RE: The Reserved List – It’s hard to defend a decision I can’t talk about. It’s just something we’re going to have to live with. :(“
With Legacy quickly gaining popularity in the Magic community as a whole, especially in the New England area where many Vintage players reside, prices of key cards are sure to skyrocket.
If Wizards’ decisions can be swayed by consumers voices, then I strongly urge all Magic: the Gathering players who would like to see special purpose reprints to email Wizards of the Coast. With enough overwhelming response, hopefully this bad policy change can be corrected so that Legacy and Vintage players in the Boston area (and across the globe) can continue to see special foil reprints of old favorites and cards needed for serious tournament play.
Along with the changes to the reprint policy, the same announcement also unveiled a few cards that will still be reprinted this year. See below for the full list:
Wizards of the Coast recently previewed Phyrexian Negator and Masticore as premium cards that will appear in 2010 Magic® products. Although our reprint policy allows for these premium versions, concern from the community about future reprints has prompted us to alter the policy.
Below are all premium versions of reserved-list cards that will be released in 2010:
Duel Decks: Phyrexia vs. the Coalition (March 19)
From the Vault: Relics (August 27)
Karn, Silver Golem
Judge Promos (various)
Wheel of Fortune
These premium cards will be produced and distributed as specified. Thereafter, Wizards of the Coast will not print any physical, reserved-list card in a tournament-legal version, either in premium or non-premium form.
Duel Decks: Phyrexia Vs. The Coalition will be available for purchase this Friday at any of the Places to Play Magic around Boston.
