Richard “Dick” Withington formally stepped down from a slate of Democratic candidates for 1st Congressional District representative.
In a press release submitted Sunday, Mar. 21, Withington said he “was unable to generate the necessary financial resources” to officially enter the race.
His initial goals in considering this office, which included “to set a more productive bi-partisan tone in District 1,” are still valid, Withington said.
He might attempt to achieve those initial goals through a smaller office, too. “I am still motivated to serve my fellow citizens, and I am seriously considering running for Horry County Council District 5,” Withington said. He will announce his decision later this week.
While he offered no endorsement to any of the others seeking this congressional office, Withington did offer them a positive parting message. “I wish all the announced candidates well,” he said.
Candidates are required to file their campaigns with the state or local Democratic parties by Mar. 30.
Of the remaining declared candidates Robert Burton and Robert Dobbs, as well as potential candidate Theron Hamilton of North Charleston, only Burton has filed to date.
