I had hoped to use this space to review last night’s 9-7 Wootton lacrosse win over Whitman, but have to admit that circumstances beyond my control (read that as Montgomery County traffic) kept me from attending.
Across town however, I managed to take in Whitman baseball’s tense and exciting 4-3 win over Gaithersburg in another 4A West matchup. Whitman’s Michael Flack and Gaithersburg’s Nick Riley both pitched masterful games, with Flack giving up only 4 hits while Riley scattered 7, both over 7 full innings of work.
Gaithersburg’s Billy Cullen unloaded his second home run in as many games in the first inning, but in the end the Vikings pulled the game out in their half of the sixth, breaking a 3-3 tie on a triple (somewhat misplayed out in right field) by Sam Avayou, and a swinging bunt single by James Dionne that he beat out strictly on speed and determination.
Both teams face 4A division rivals next as the season is in full swing with division games the order of the day for all teams over the next 10 days. Whitman will get Northwest at home on Thursday while Gaithersburg travels to undefeated (10-0) Wootton, also on Thursday.
I will be at the Wootton game and will have a report for Friday. In the meantime, enjoy the photos from yesterday’s game.
Tomorrow: A profile of Blake pitcher Tommy Cunningham and the 3A division leading Bengals.
