“The Museum That Runs”, Wheels Through Time American Transportation Museum (WTT), in Maggie Valley, North Carolina has been closed since December 2008 except for an occasional special event or private party. Beginning on May 1, 2010, the museum will be open five days a week, Thursday through Monday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Opening in 1993 and heralded as the “Smithsonian of Motorcycles”, the museum is regarded as one of the world’s premier destinations for motorcycle and transportation history. This very impressive display of motorcycles is the collection of Dale Walksler who has personally overseen the restorations of some of America’s finest vintage machines.
Wheels Through Time is located in Western North Carolina (WNC) in beautiful Maggie Valley and just five miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. WTT houses over 300 of America’s rarest and most historic classic motorcycles including Harley-Davidson, Indian, Excelsior, Crocker, Henderson, and much more. Other motorcycle-related exhibits include board track racers, hillclimbers, posters, and historic memorabilia and artifacts. The museum has been featured in hundreds of motorcycle publications including American Iron, Cycle World, and The American Motorcyclist.
The museum has flourished as one of the area’s largest and most popular attractions. As part of its agenda for 2010, WTT will participate in the North Carolina Department of Commerce Visit North Carolina Partnership ad campaign. The museum is also working with the Department of Transportation to attract both potential museum visitors and WNC travelers alike with an expanded signage program on major highways.
To help fund the projects and displays at WTT, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation, a restored vintage motorcycle is raffled each year. This year’s raffle winner will be able ride off on a 1947 Harley-Davidson FL-74in. Knucklehead (or take the $20,000 value). Raffle tickets are available at the museum or online. The drawing will be held in November, 2010.
For any motorcycle enthusiast traveling to Western North Carolina or Eastern Tennessee (perhaps to ride the Tail of the Dragon), this museum is a must see.
