Each week I endeavor to list new performance art productions opening around the Twin Cities. With such an abundance of companies and venues in the area, keeping track of openings can be a challenge, but I’ll link whatever I can find. Provided descriptions are reprinted from production websites.
Bloomington Civic Theatre: The King and I
In 1862 Siam, Anna, an English widow, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. Soon Anna and the King grow to a mutual understanding and respect. Along with the dazzling score, the incomparable Jerome Robbins ballet, “The Small House of Uncle Thomas,” is one of the all-time marvels of the musical stage. Runs through 05/22.

Jungle Theater: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Bain Boehlke directs a stellar cast in an electrifying Jungle production. When George, a disillusioned academic, and Martha, his caustic wife, invite a handsome young professor and his mousy wife home for a nightcap, an innocent night of fun and games quickly turns dark and dangerous. Long-buried resentments are unleashed as George and Martha turn their razor-sharp wits against each other, using their guests as pawns in their verbal sparring. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, and considered by many to be Albee’s masterpiece. Runs through 05/30.

Starting Gate Productions: Our Country’s Good
In June 1789 in the penal colony that was later to become the city of Sydney, a marine lieutenant decides to put on a play to celebrate the king’s birthday. He casts the play with the English convicts who populate this distant Australian prison camp. A touching story about justice and the redeeming power of theater. Runs at Mound’s Theatre through 05/17.

Theatre in the Round Players: Relatively Speaking
When his fiancée Ginny insists on going alone for a weekend visit to her parents’ country cottage, Greg finds what he thinks is their address and sets off to surprise her. He’s half right: it isn’t her parents’ address, but he really does surprise her. This masterpiece of confusion is one of the most frequently-produced comedies by Britain’s top living playwright, Alan Ayckbourn. Runs through 05/16.

History Theatre: Queens of Burlesque
A funny, poignant, and revealing look at the lives of burlesque performers both on and off stage. With a wink and a nod to both naughty and nice, you will be transported back to a hot August night at the Gay 90s in 1953 where the drama in the ladies’ dressing room is rivaled only by the dancers’ sizzle on the stage. As an era comes to an end in the wake of televisions and changing social mores, these performers find themselves caught between economics of the time and the talents that they’d spent their lives honing. Stand up comics and girls with boas draped over just the right places make for a provocative night of music, dance, and laughter. Runs through 05/23.
