If your dog is anything like mine, they always have energy to burn. A great way to get them exercised and socialized is a giant, dog friendly patch of land to run to their hearts content with their fellow hounds.
One such locale in the Twin Cities is known as the airport dog park, located off the Crosstown Highway (Hwy 62) to the 28th Street Exit. Go south toward the airport and go to the end of the street. You’ll see the MAC offices on the right. The dog park is the grassy area between the MAC building and the runways. You may park along the street or in the MAC parking lot.
This is an 80 acre off-leash dog park that is not entirely fenced in but because it is such a large space, unless your dog has a real desire to ditch you, this does not seem to be a problem.
Each time my little mutt and I make the trip here, we are not disappointed. There have always been plenty of doggie playmates for her and a plethora of welcoming, dog friendly humans for me to strike up a conversation with.
This is a wonderful park that requires no special permit to have our dog off -leash.
Remember to bring your own doggie bags and clean up after dog. However, there are no trash cans available so you will have to bring full poop bags somewhere else to dispose of them.
This park also has its’ own blog site, airportdogpark.com, where patrons can discuss comments and concerns that arise regarding the park.
This is a great place for that energetic pup in your life to run off some serious energy and have a great time.
Beside the lack of a disposal area for used doggie bags, the only down side to this park is its’ proximity to the St. Paul/ Minneapolis International airport, as a result the planes going over head and taking off and landing so close create quite a lot of noise. So, count on your dog not always being able to hear you calling.
