On March 19th, 2010 the Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that all 392 national parks in the United States will have free admission during National Park Week, April 17 to 25. Now, this is a great idea for home schooling families to get some great,historical teaching in as well as a fun time. The closest National Parks to Orlando, Florida are, De Soto National Memorial Park, located in Tampa, FL about 122 miles away and about a 2 hour drive from O town and there is lot of fun outdoor activities for the whole family. You can camp out, have a picnic, go fishing and bring your bathing suits, because this park has several beaches for the family to enjoy right within the park. Also, for those of you who don’t want to leave your pets at home, dogs area allowed in on a leash. Another National Park not too far from our own O town is Fort Caroline National Park located in Jacksonville, FL you can expect to travel a little over 2 hours for this exciting day. Fort Caroline memorializes the short-lived French presence in sixteenth century Florida. Here you will find stories of survival, exploration, territorial battles, religious disputes, and the first contact between Europeans and the American Indians, this park is great for the older kids and they can even right a book report on their experiences and the historical events that took place there. This is a great family travel week, so lets get packing and take a road trip. Have Fun.
