Kieren Hebden, better known as the musician Four Tet, has been making waves around the world since 2003. His work in the genre of Electronica have been labeled visionary, and as Matthew Cole of Slant magazine writes, “you’d have to go back to 2002 to find a time when Hebden’s Four Tet project wasn’t synonymous with both innovation and consistency in songcraft.”
Despite notable international success, Hebden’s music had yet to echo in the US market until this year. But this has come at the right time.
Released in 2010, There Is Love In You is arguably the best Four Tet album to date. Critics the world over have raved about this album and it has turned Four Tet into a true global success. In the US charts, the March 18 issue of Rolling Stone has There is Love in You as #7 in their College Radio charts. Amoeba Records reported it as the #5 best seller in Berkeley & San Francisco in the two weeks after its release on January 25, 2010. And in the UK, it peaked at 35 in the album charts despite the relatively small size of the Electronica genre.
Complex and emotional, yet outwardly minimal; that is the style Four Tet has always been known for and There Is Love In You exemplifies this. To date, two tracks from the album have been released. Love Cry bounces to a danceable groove while in the background Hebden’s electronic melodies tell an emotional story. Sing combines analog blips with a House feel to create an energetic, albeit slightly repetitive, ride through sound.
This nine track epic, released by Domino Records, is a subtly intricate collection of songs that are as pleasing to the ears and body, as they are to the mind. From the very first track, Angel Echoes, you can hear Hebden’s ability to create heady beats. The song begins with a steady, simple rhythm and an air of mystery. But once the haunting melody of restitched female vocals begin, so does your journey.
Since the release of his album Rounds in 2003, Four Tet, has been labeled a visionary in the up and coming genre of Electronica. In Rounds, his use of left-field samples to create minimalistic yet hypnotic soundscapes have entranced listeners the world over.
Despite all the beauty in Hebden’s beats, the US market had yet to fall in love with his music and his genre, Electronica. Four Tet had achieved some success in major markets like the UK, Europe and Japan, resulting in collaboration and remix projects with big acts like Radiohead, Thom Yorke, and Bloc Party to name a few. However, even in a place as diverse and DJ-centric as the San Francisco bay area, Four Tet had yet to really break ground.
Finally in 2010, Four Tet has garnered the international success it deserves. As Sean Thomas of DrownedinSound.com writes, “in There is Love in You we see one of the last decade’s most early pioneers reminding us all that he’s still just as important as ever.” And now the whole music world agrees.
