Today’s hurling of the word, “nigger” at Representative John Lewis, Democrat of Georgia, must have the Tea Party’s leadership using a line from The Godfather III. “Whenever I try to get out, they keep pulling me back!”
The Tea Party leadership has been trying to get away from social issues, instead focusing on economic and fiscal matters that have so far been successful in tying together conservatives, Republicans, Tea Partyers, and any other assorted bunch of Obama haters. Unfortunately for the political arena’s flavor of the month, the ultimate social issue, race, is one that will not be leaving Tea Partyers alone anytime soon.
It’s bad enough that the Tea Party’s demographics make Republicans look like a left-wing group and we won’t forget the demeaning posters of President Barack Obama depicted as a witch doctor, a communist, or Adolf Hitler, paraded around by a bunch of older, pot-bellied white boys. Not helpful to the party’s image at all.
There are two ironies. First, the Tea Party, while erroneously referring to Mr. Obama as a nazis and a communist, don’t realize that he can’t be both. Hitler hated communists.
Second, given their vitriol, the racist name calling, and their explosion on the scene so soon after the inaguration, the hate spewed by this “diverse” group of political intervenors, reminds me of the hate spilled by another little man some eighty years ago. Hitler dug deep into a German psyche that was overly burdened by a poor economy. He pounded away at that psyche with irrational messages of hate, similar to the messages we are hearing today.
The Tea Party has a decision to make today. It can continue down that road of fringe thinking ( and pick up a few neo-Nazis on the way) or it can truly focus on economic and fiscal solutions and support viable candidates that want to pursue this path.
