The Abbey is touted as the best gay bar in the world, but it may just have the best spinach and artichoke dip in the world too. The large bar/restaurant on Robertson Blvd., just south of Santa Monica Blvd., has something for everyone. You’ll walk into a spacious patio with a European feel, and you can either choose to dine out in the open or go into the darkly lit bar area to the right and sit near the cozy, yet sexy fireplace. You can choose to indulge in one of The Abbey’s fabulous cocktails, but it is wise to fill up your belly first and enjoy the many scrumptious treats The Abbey has to offer.
You can choose to go straight after work for great $5 Happy Hour specials from 4-7 pm Monday to Friday, where you’ll find professionals mingling alongside party goers starting the night early. Either way, The Abbey provides a very fun, relaxed environment where everyone feels welcome. And food is served daily from 9 am until 2 am, so you’ll always have a chance to grab a bite. The service is also top notch, not to mention the staff is very easy on the eyes too. ;-)
Now let’s get to the food. The appetizers at The Abbey are spectacular. The Spinach & Artichoke Dip has got to be the best I have ever tasted. It’s loaded with generous lumps of artichoke, mixed with spinach blended with mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, and it’s served with The Abbey’s delicious homemade potato chips. The Hummus is also very good, garnished with extra virgin olive oil, Kalamata olives and servd with warm pita bread wedges. It’s also a very generous portion for only $8. You can also get appetizers like Macaroni & Cheese topped with bread crumbs, Grilled Chicken Satay, Abbey Sliders or The Abbey Nachos Supremacy. There is even an Abbey Sampler with a variety of appetizers if you can’t make up your mind.
The Abbey also has great salads like the Warm Chicken Salad with romaine lettuce, pine nuts, cranberries, goat cheese and grilled chicken breast tossed in balsamic vinaigrette. There is even a Southern Fried Chicken Salad, which has buttermilk batter dipped and fried chicken breast, diced tomatoes, bacon and avocado served over iceberg lettuce tossed in blue cheese dressing. And for all the salads, you have your choice of adding seared ahi, grilled chicken, marinated steak or jumbo shrimp. You can also choose your dressing.
For your entree, you can choose a pasta dish like Fettuccini Alfredo with jumbo shrimp, Spaghetti Bolognese or Penne Alla Marinara or you can choose a delicious burger or sandwich from the grill, like the Grilled Ahi Burger, the Chicken Pesto Sandwich, Abbey Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich, “The Original Philly Recipe”, or even a Vegetarian Sandwich with hummus. They also offer a delicious Grilled Atlantic Salmon with mixed vegetables and your choice of sides. The garlic mashed potatoes are fabulous. Or, if you want meat, The Abbey also serves an excellent Grilled New York Steak or you can get the Chicken Rio if you want something with a kick. It’s all white-meat Brazilian grilled chicken breast topped with a savory chimichurri sauce, served with white rice, black beans and fresh salsa.
For dessert, The Abbey serves up a variety of delicious cakes, like red velvet, lemon, coconut, Godiva chocolate, and a divine carrot cake. They also have great cheesecakes, pies and cookies, or cupcakes from “Crumbs Bake Shop.”
You can also get one of their fabulous cocktails as a dessert. The key lime martini is absolutely delicious and could serve as a dessert all by itself! The Abbey is also known for its cocktails which are heavenly and are served in large glasses, so you won’t ever have to complain that your glass is too small. ;-)
The Abbey also offers delicious breakfast from 9 am to 2 pm daily. But if you feel like some eggs for dinner, you can even order off their Breakfast Anytime menu. That’s how accommodating they are at The Abbey.
The Abbey is open every day of the year from 9 am to 2 am. It is located at 692 N. Robertson Blvd., between Melrose Ave. and Santa Monica Blvd. For more information, you can call 310-289-8410 or visit their website at www.abbeyfoodandbar.com.
