Healthy boundaries are one of the key and core ingredients for optimal work-life balance. You will automatically have better work-life balance when you improve your boundaries.
Let’s start with a simple and slightly modified definition of boundaries from our friends at Wikipedia: “Personal boundaries are guidelines, rules or limits that a person creates to identify for themselves what are reasonable, safe and permissible ways for other people to behave around them and how they will respond when someone steps outside those limits.”
And let’s also add this: Boundaries can be proactive or reactive. Typically we think of boundaries as being reactive, like letting someone know when your boundaries have been violated. In that case, you’re reacting to someone else’s behavior or actions.
And there are also proactive boundaries and this would include asking for what you want, need or desire. This is commonly referred to as being assertive. When you assert yourself you’re using boundaries because you’ve identified the want, need or desire and you’re going into action to create that.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly and the most overlooked, are the boundaries you have with yourself. There will be a direct correlation between the boundaries you have with yourself and the boundaries you have with others. If you have a hard time saying “no” to yourself, you’ll have a hard time saying “no” to others. Likewise, if you have a hard time following through with your own commitments, in other words saying “yes” to yourself, you’ll probably have a hard time asserting yourself with others.
Good, healthy boundaries start with the boundaries that you set with yourself. Start by having a clear vision of what you want your life to be. Then, start setting goals for yourself. Use the SMART goals model.
When you’ve created a powerful and exciting vision for your life and have clear goals, the boundaries will become much clearer. When your boundaries are clearer, and you follow through with them, you’ll instantaneously begin to create optimal work-life balance.
And optimal work-life balance will make you happier, healthier and wealthier all the days of your life!
