The angry and hate-filled speech that William Gheen gave in Greenville last weekend accusing SC Senator Lindsey Graham of secretly being gay was no surprise to me, as the Tea Party is full of this kind of immature thinking.
I was happy to see the attention it got, however, as it shows the very real identity of the Tea Party, the one they like to claim doesn’t exist. I was even happier that the entire speech was posted on the internet so you can hear the both Gheen’s speech and the crowd reaction without the Tea Party apologists being able to spin it.
You can watch the entire hate-filled (and crowd-loved) speech online without any “liberal media” in between you and the real Tea Party. Here it is:
Tea Party Activist Calls Lindsey Graham Gay Because He Supports Immigration Reform
My mind was made up long before William Gheen tried to “call out” Lindsay Graham in his ninth-grade level rant. Really, anyone who spends any time reading and listening to what the Tea Party folks down here in the Carolinas have to say will find that this is their real identity.
They like to use code words like anti-government or anti-tax to cover it up, but there is a lot of that old fashioned racial and moral fundamentalist hatred at the heart of the Tea Party. So I appreciate it when we get to hear the Tea Party unfiltered as in the Gheen speech, so the “Tea Baggers” can’t deny it.
And, yes, I know the Tea Party folks are mad at the government. I get it. But so what? Everybody is mad at the government. I can’t name a single person I know who is at this point happy with the government.
Heck, I’m a social liberal…and a social liberal is president…and I’m still furious with the government 24-7.
That doesn’t give people on any side an excuse to act like immature bullies in public and call “faggot!” on conservative politicians (based only on rumors and gossip) just because they aren’t right-wing enough.
Really, we’re supposed to be getting advice on how to vote from these folks? I thought we left them behind in high school.
Heck, even if Lindsay Graham IS secretly gay and that is a big deal (which I don’t think it is) he doesn’t deserve to be outed over immigration reform.
Is this really the future solution to our anger?
If the sum of our national intelligence is Gheen’s call to “speak American” we would be in no better shape if the Tea Party controlled the entire government. We would be living in a fascist state, albeit one run by amateur fascists and not even real fascists who know what they are.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the Republican Party. I mean, let’s face it, we all know the Republicans are using the Tea Party folks right now to try and win big in the mid-term elections. The GOP isn’t even really trying to hide it. They are riding the Tea Party and the Tea Party is, for now, willing to be ridden.
But what happens when the Tea Party branch of the GOP gets some real power, and not just the pretend authority they have now? If the Tea Party really does help the GOP defeat the Democratic majority in the mid-terms, are guys like William Gheen going to be happy at stopping there?
Of course not. The one decent thing I can say about Gheen is he does want real reform. Fascist reform, yes, but let’s give him what little credit he is due. At least he isn’t trying to fool anybody. He says what he means and asks for what he wants: a Republican Party of hate-filled extremists.
The GOP will pretend to give him that if it helps win the mid-term elections. But after that? What happens when Republican candidates get in office and start acting like…well, Republicans…instead of lunatic fascists?
There is going to be trouble in the GOP/Tea Party alliance when William Gheen and his crowd get tired of being in high school and want to turn pro. They’ll be coming for more than Lindsey Graham then, they’ll be coming for the soul of the Republican Party.
Will the GOP give it to them?
