For most of us work is that large chunk of the day that we spend away from our significant other. In fact, Tampa Bay area citizens spend even more time getting to and from work than most according to a recent report by Forbes. Haydn and Alisha Edwards, however, get the kids off to school and then remain in their neighborhood to operate their shared business.
Haydn and Alisha recently celebrated their ten year anniversary by taking in the sights of Vegas. It granted them a rare change of pace from the life they share as partners in every sense of the word. They have carved out a successful niche in the print industry operating Edwards Printing and Signs, home to both tampabizcards.com and doorhangersetc.com. Before combining their talents Alisha was a successful project manager and worked in the private sector utilizing the skills she’d learned while attaining a technical degree. Haydn, an entrepreneur at heart, decided early on that his best line of work was one in which he called his own shots. It has greatly helped their cause that in lean times Alisha has been able to fall back on her skills to find outside work in support of their business.
From a relationship standpoint, Alisha admits that a pitfall unique to spending all day together, versus coming together after the work day, is remembering to schedule quality time. She states that ways around this are to make the little gestures throughout the day that otherwise couldn’t be shared if not for working together. They recommend that before starting a business together, it is important to clearly define and establish roles. This helps to minimize clashes and when disagreements do arise, fall back on those defined roles as the tiebreaker. Also, it is critical for the one who takes on the boss role, to remember that this doesn’t also extend to home.
In the end, the pros have outweighed the cons, and chief among the advantages are the increased family time. The kids come from school and go straight to the shop and there are daily opportunities to all arrive home at the same time for family dinner. At the end of the day, that’s really what it’s all about, the strength of love, the blessing of family and the added advantage of calling your own shots.
