As NBC casts its new season of The Biggest Loser, many hopeful people are eager for a chance to compete. However, since thousands of people are auditioning for relatively few spots, there will be a lot of people left on their own to lose the weight.
Why not start your own biggest loser — or smallest winner — group? Gather your friends, or use a site like MeetUp to gather like-minded “friends you haven’t met yet.” There are already many Denver-based fitness-oriented MeetUp groups — join one or create your own.
Perhaps each participant could contribute a set amount of money to the pot — and the winner takes all the money, or a portion is given to first, second, and third place. Weight loss is motivating, but when the going gets tough, that financial investment will motivate you through the dark days when you feel like giving up.
Group fitness classes could play a big part in your competition. Not only do they provide a great way to get the daily exercise you need to achieve your goals, it’s a chance to get together with your competitors to push and cheer each other.
For additional motivation, set aside some of the money in the pot to create an incentive for attending group fitness classes. The participant who wins for best attendance in a three-month period may or may not have lost the most weight, but he or she has certainly improved his/her physical fitness and is creating an excellent habit of workout consistency and dedication.
And at the end of your competition, isn’t that what it’s about? Someone will win some money, but everyone involved will have started down the road to changing their lives for the better.
