Surf rockers, the Space Cossacks and the Atomic Mosquitos, invade Iota Club and Cafe in Arlington, on May 15th. The Space Cossacks will be getting together for the first time in ten years. The Atomic Mosquitos cross the Potomac River to prove that they are one of the best surf rock bands this side of Three Mile Island. The show starts at 9 pm and costs $12 to enter.
The Space Cossacks were Washington, DC’s premier all instrumental surf combo from 1996 until 2000. They released two full-length CDs on MuSick Recordings, “Interstellar Stomp” in 1998 and “Tsar Wars” in 2000. They released three split vinyl EPs, and a bunch of compilation only tracks (including tributes to the Ventures, the Shadows and Link Wray). A retrospective compilation CD “Never Mind the Bolsheviks” was released in 2005 on MuSick Recordings. They played Boston, Atlanta, Seattle, Huntington Beach, CA and many points in between, before the band broke up in 2000. They were recognized as one of the top acts of the nineties surf music revival. Band members are Ivan Pongracic on lead guitar, Mark English on rhythm guitar, Catherine Gray on bass, and Arlington’s own Doug Hoekstra on drums.
When asked what he wants to accomplish with his music, Doug answers, “I want to make people dance and make some sort of living. A decent wage would be nice”.
