Google has launched a native Gemini app for Windows, bringing the AI assistant out of the browser and into a desktop application for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The company says the app is available globally today.
The main idea is to make Gemini accessible without interrupting whatever task is already on screen. Pressing Alt + Space opens Gemini as an overlay above the active window. Google positions this for quick jobs: fact-checking a document, generating title ideas for a presentation, or getting an answer without switching away from the work at hand.
For longer sessions, the app has a dedicated workspace. This is where users can work with Gemini Spark, which Google calls a 24/7 personal AI agent, to hand off multi-step tasks. It can also draw on Google apps such as Gmail and Google Drive. Google gives the example of asking Gemini to draft a project summary by pulling relevant information directly from those apps. That integration is the clearest reason to choose the desktop app over a browser tab: it is designed to connect with the documents and messages already stored in Google’s ecosystem.
Image and video generation are included in the same desktop workspace. Users can create custom images with Nano Banana and direct high-quality video with Gemini Omni, according to Google. The company’s framing is that a presentation, for example, can be built with generated visuals without leaving the app.
