School sports in Guilford County start in the 7th grade. Middle school is a good time to try new things and see what will interest your child at a minimum financial cost to you. Not only is it good for your child, it’s good for the family.
This is a great opportunity to show support for one member of the family at a time. In spite of any embarrassment your child may profess, the love shown by showing up is just depositing more and more into their emotional bank. All of this builds into your family infrastructure – just make sure one child doesn’t get more support than another.
I recently attended my first middle school track meet. I was impressed by the sense of community among the parents from both teams. Parents for both teams cheered when someone got up and finished the race after falling, or for that last runner who managed to finish when you could see she was really struggling.
Greensboro is a great sized city which offers many of the amenities of a large city, but retains the personal sense of belonging of a small town. School sporting events are truly an opportunity to experience that sense of belonging.
Even if you don’t have kids involved yet in these activities, I encourage you to find the middle school your child will attend and go to some of these events with your children. Win or lose, the excitement is contagious and you’ll feel good when you leave.
