Rick and I have started doing something every morning which I think would profit other married couples. Every morning, after we have our respective quiet times, exercise sessions and breakfasts, we hold hands for a few seconds and pray a blessing for each other.
We started doing this because, about 3 weeks ago, we both got really bad colds that turned into bronchitis. It seemed to be taking forever for us to get well. We ran through a couple of boxes of Kleenex and several bottles of cough syrup. We skipped church because we didn’t want to interrupt the sermon with our constant coughing. We were both miserable.
Usually, when I’m sick, he takes care of me and when he’s sick I take care of him, but with both of us being sick… we were both cranky and tired and ended up sniping at each other.
Finally, last week we decided to start every morning with a prayer for each other. We’d been praying for each other on our own but we decided it might help our spousal harmony to start each day that way. Since then, a wonderful change has come to our marriage – we may go through frustrating tiring things throughout the day but we somehow seem to have the internal resources to still be pleasant even at the end of the day.
We’ve only been doing this for a little over a week now, but it’s had a good effect on our marriage. Why not give it a try yourself, and see if it helps yours?
