If you’re at work reading this, you must not have gotten the word that today is Foursquare Day. Well, finish your workday, but if you are looking for a way to celebrate, read on.
For those not on Foursquare or not even aware of what it is, a brief explanation. Foursquare is a location based application that you can have on your desktop, but is most usable on a mobile device. Its application is currently available for iPhones, Androids, Blackberry any phone supporting a webOS or Windows Mobile OS. The app allows you to “check-in” wherever you are at, with the opportunity to leave comments or tips about the venue. If you have the most check-ins at a location, you can become “mayor” of that location. The app also has a gaming element as you collect badges as you use it. What makes it more of a game is that just frequent use alone does not unlock some badges. For businesses, there are also ways to promote your business and Foursquare has tools that allow businesses to measure activity through it. We’ll have more on that aspect in future articles.
The idea to give Foursquare its own day began as a user generated phenomenon. An optometrist in Tampa made the connection that 4 squared was 16 and thought 4/16 would be a good day to celebrate the social media app. The idea was spawned just 36 days ago, but the holiday has become a world wide event, with mass “swarms” planned in locations all over the world. Unfortunately, a look at the list of cities offering Foursquare Day events shows not a one in Santa Ana. Well, maybe next year.
In the meantime, a couple of nearby options. South Coast Auto Plaza in Costa Mesa is having a Four Square Day Special. If you mention Foursquare Day today at their body shop, you will get a free car wash. Store manager Dan Butler saw this day as an opportunity to expand his social media marketing outreach. “I’ve been using Foursquare personally for about 6 months,” said Butler. “When I heard about this day I thought it would be a good way for people to know about us. With the auto body industry in a slump, I need to find effective ways to get more work into the shop without spending any money.”
If your looking to gather with a bunch of other Foursquare enthusiasts, you could head out to Downtown Disney in Anaheim between 7:30 and 8:30 this evening to try and get a Foursquare Swarm badge, created just for today’s events. For more information about these and other events happening, you can find a list organized by city here.
