For Romanian music fans in San Francisco, and everywhere, great news! The Romanian music band Nightlosers have now gone global! No longer do you need wait until you visit Romania to get your music fix.
Their second album, “Plum Brandy Blues“, initially launched in 1998, is now available to fans via iTunes, as well as Rhapsody.com and Napster.com, where it can be purchased online in both Europe and the US.
…And it only gets better! Nightlosers are now announcing the launch on iTunes of yet another one of their albums, coming this month! The name of the upcoming release is “Rhythm & Bulz“, and is a reproduced version of their third album first released back in 2005. All three albums (the first being launched on tape in 1995, called “Sitting On Top of the World“) were received with much enthusiasm by both critics and fans.
For those of you who are not familiar with their music, Nightlosers are a Romanian ethno-blues band that was formed in the city of Cluj in 1994, whose talent consists in their remarkable ability to find common roots between country-rock, American Blues and Eastern Europe folk music.
Even though they usually start their songs from well known song platforms, their own bluesy sound is superb and completely unexpected. It is a complex matter which incorporates everything from a country fiddler playing jig patterns, to a banjo plunking away, followed by the bass and drums playing a country-mile two step which then naturally slips into a fast polka and makes it all sound very much like most Transylvanian folk music. Which reminds the listener that the Nightlosers are from Romania, Transylvania, after all…The singing is absolutely authentic, as well, so that at the end of each song you are left wanting more…
Whenever asked to label their own style, the Nightlosers simply state that they have never given this a thought. Their music comes from inside and they simply let it out without much ado about it. They are all virtuouso musicians who love to improvise and make use of their excellent sense of humor and ironic-seriousness so that most of their live performances end up being unique, allowing their passion transpire no matter what and where they are playing. This, in fact, has ensured their originality and given zest and color to all their songs, from “Shame Shame Shame” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_D7qd0wBKiU to “Dragostea e ca o raie”/ “Blue Suede Shoes” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A751vseyfXw .
Here is their line up:
* Hanno Höfer (vocals, guitar, harmonica, washboard)
* Grunzo Geza (keyboard)
* Claudiu “Nasu” Purcarin (drums)
* Octavian “Barila” Andreescu (string bass)
* Jimi Lako (violin/fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo)
All five are complex musicians who play more than one instrument and have been much acclaimed for their imaginative and unique ways of expressing their music.
Besides being the leader, guitarist and vocalist of the band, Hanno Höfer is also a historian by education and an awarded film director and producer. As a matter of fact, we are glad to point out for our San Francisco readers that Hanno’s short movie “Ajutoare umanitare”/ “Humanitarian Aids” was featured at the Romanian Film Festival in Stanford last week, on Saturday, April 17th where it was received enthusiastically by the American audience. The movie is a 16 minutes long comedy and was shot in Romania in 2002. It won the Grand Prize at the 2002 Cottbus Film Festival of Young East European Cinema and, since then, many other awards and special mentions at Clermont, Montpellier and Milano, in addition to receiving great attention and praising reviews at other various film festivals all over the world.

The other guitarist/violonist in the band, Jimi Lako, is considered to be the best and most original guitarist in Romania at the moment by most music critics.
