Few stores have ever been as aptly named as Games Unlimited in Squirrel Hill, PA. Not only has it been a Pittsburgh institution for over thirty years, but it is also one of the first gaming stores in the country. That long history is apparent as soon as you walk through the door. This isn’t a new shop that placed an order of today’s hottest games, put them on the shelf and opened for business. Games Unlimited has grown over time and there is wisdom reflected in their product selection.
Where smaller stores may have one or two different chess sets, Games Unlimited carries dozens. Looking for heirloom quality chess sets? They have a selection to choose from. Need a set that travels easily? Take your pick. There are even variants like 3D Chess, Tic Tac Chec, and the ancient Noble Celts Chess. Games Unlimited also carries Chess clocks so you know that they take the sport of Chess seriously.
The family games section.
The purchasing philosophy behind the deep selection of Chess products is reflected throughout Games Unlimited. The family game selection has a nice mixture of the traditional (Monopoly, Clue, Scrabble, Taboo), the cutting edge (Hive, Blokus, Ingenious, Banagrams, Qwirkle) and even the obscure.
Prominently displayed in the family section is Bisikle, a bicycle racing where each player flicks a specially designed “Zball” to move their cyclist forward. It takes guts to carry a game that is so unique – so “European” – in Pittsburgh. But owner Bob Schwartz and store manager Jim Lawson know a good game when they see it.
So much fun to choose from!
This good taste is also on display deeper in the store in the heart of the board game selection. There you will find the best board games on the market. Games like Pandemic, Ghost Stories: White Moon, Dungeon Lords, Lost Cities, and Empire Builder. The selection of great games is so deep and diverse it can actually be a bit overwhelming.
To help you choose, one shelving unit is dedicated to the “Spiel des Jahres” Game of the Year Winners. Games like Alhambra, Tikal, Ticket to Ride, Zooloretto, Carcassonne, and Settlers of Catan. These are considered to be the top quality games in the German market, yet many US game stores don’t even carry them. But you can find them in quantity at Games Unlimited.
If the board game selection is staggering, the puzzle selection continues the tradition. The farthest back section of Games Unlimited is filled with hundreds of jigsaw puzzles for every taste and skill set. Games Unlimited even carries 3,000 to 24,000 piece puzzles that take up an entire room once completed! I didn’t even know they made jigsaw puzzles that enormous!
Games Unlimited is a jewel not only for Pittsburgh, but for board gamers everywhere. If you live anywhere within driving distance of Pittsburgh, it’s well worth the trip. For those of you who don’t, many of their products are available for mail order through their webpage. However you find Games Unlimited – either in person or online – you’ll see that it is the gaming store done right.
