The 2010 Point Series Race begins on Sunday, April 25th, FMX la Frontera MX Park at 5461 O’Leary Road in El Paso, with a practice day on Saturday, April 24th and a short practice beginning at 8 am on Sunday. To allow adequate time for track preparation the track will close at 3 pm after Saturday’s practice. The practice fee for the day will be $10. See the FMX la Frontera Facebook page, or the web site for classes and schedules.
The FMX la Frontera course is well-designed and safe, but pre-race practice is highly recommended, because it offers obstacle challenges that can make the difference between placing and simply finishing. With the beginning of the point series race, and the trophies and championship at stake, finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd consistently is critical. Since the course is now being continuously maintained, previously existing lines are removed, jump faces are prepped, and turns smoothed. The course design allows riders to choose how they will respond to the different obstacles, rather than being forced into a particular approach as on some courses. At FMX la Frontera, several jumps may be singled, doubled, or rolled over. The back step-up/triple is definitely the rider’s choice, but requires line selection when coming off the previous double, before the turn into the step-up. Other choices include whether to ride high on the berm in 3rd shifting to 4th in preparation for the next jump, or whether to master the tight, inside approach, using the shorter distance to obtain a passing advantage.
A common race technique is to use other riders’ to reference one’s speed. However, it is important to remember that weight, height, physical condition and movement style all affect precision. Throttle action and gear selection that works effectively for one rider may result in another rider casing a jump or overshooting a landing. Motocross is a sport that requires knowledge, experience and practice, and there is simply no substitute for developing one’s own skills and talents.
Open practice hours are 10 am to dusk Saturdays and Sundays; 2 pm to dusk Fridays; and 4 pm to dusk Tuesdays and Thursdays. Team practice slots are available, and the track offers a 10% military and law enforcement discount on monthly membership plans. Contact the management at (575) 635-1398 for more details.
