Only six states restrict open carry gun laws; Starbucks will comply with those laws. Starbucks is in the midst of an open carry gun control debate and they wish they weren’t. Starbucks announced Wednesday that they will comply with laws in 43 states that currently have open-carry weapon laws, the Associated Press reported. Starbucks asked gun carriers and gun control advocates “to refrain from putting Starbucks or our partners into the middle of this divisive issue.”
43 states currently have a gun law that allows open-carry, which means anyone can carry a gun out in the open (and some states do not require proof of ownership of that gun).
States with no carry laws throughout most of the state (some counties may permit it) are: California, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey and New York. According to Wikipedia, New York is one of the strictest states on gun laws.
Over the past 10 years there have been various court rulings around the country regarding gun laws. According to Wikipedia: Clachelle and Kevin Jensen, were photographed together openly carrying handguns in the Salt lake City International Airport near a “no weapons” sign. The photo led to an article in The Salt Lake Tribune about the airports preempted “no weapons” signs. After a few weeks, the city removed the unlawful signs.
Recently, gun owners testing state laws have openly carried weapons into businesses, and one of the businesses they have targeted is Starbucks. In some cases a few gun owners walked into a Starbucks, and in other cases dozens of gun owners walked in wearing guns on their hips.
Gun control advocates openly protested. Businesses are allowed to choose to ban guns on their premises, even in states where open carry weapon laws exist.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence immediately began a petition demanding that Starbucks “offer espresso shots, not gunshots” and asked them to declare Starbucks stores “gun-free zones.” 28,000 signatures were delivered to Starbucks in Seattle on Wednesday.
