With the forecast calling for rain, mud is sure to follow. Early spring, when we don’t have any fresh grass to help compensate for the mud, tends to be the messiest season of the year for dog lovers. Sometimes, letting Fido dry and grooming the dirt off just isn’t enough. At those times, a bath really is needed.
If you dread putting your muddy Labrador in your pristine white bathroom, it is nice to know there are alternatives. One of those alternatives is offered by Pet Supplies Plus on Commercial Drive in New Hartford. They offer a “do it yourself” dog bath option.
The bathing salon has been described as “just like a car wash” but luckily your dog is not put on a conveyor and shipped along. The bath area offers two tubs – a very low (5 inches off the floor) tub and another tub with a ramp so you don’t have to lift your dog.
Warm water is provided with attached hoses and you can even set it so shampoo comes directly out with the water. If your dog is on a medicated shampoo you will need to bring your own, but for most dogs this is a great option. Remember to bring cotton balls to plug Fido’s ears so no water runs in. You may want some artificial tears to flush his eyes in case he gets any shampoo in them. Wear old clothes and assume you will get at least a bit wet yourself! Be sure to rinse him thoroughly as any shampoo left on may irritate the skin when it dries. It is a good idea to bring a few treats to reward him throughout the bath time so he thinks of baths as a good thing.
Once Fido is shampooed and rinsed, you can use the hand held blow dryer to dry him and maybe even style him a bit if you have a fluffy dog. Shammy type towels are available if you prefer to towel dry your dog – or if he does not like the blow dryer. The price is $8 for 20 minutes and you can purchase additional time if you need it for $5 for 5 minutes.
The do it yourself bath area is open seven days a week during all store hours. No appointments are needed as the room is set up for first come, first serve. Plan to avoid the peak weekend hours if you can.
If you do the bath during the hours the grooming salon is open, there is a special for bath patrons. Any dog you have bathed yourself, can then go over to the grooming area and get nails trimmed, ears cleaned, teeth brushed and a breath treatment for just $18.
Once the weather truly warms up, you can try the do it yourself bath in the backyard with the hose!
