A year-and-a-half old brown and white English bulldog named Meatball was named the winner of this year’s “Beautiful Bulldog” contest in Des Moines, Iowa. The pageant is held each year to kick off Drake University’s annual track and field event. This year marks the 101st Drake Relays.
After all 50 bulldog contestants waddled across the stage, Meatball was plucked from the sea of contenders and named the winner. Amid roars of approval, a bejeweled crown was placed upon his head and a royal blue cape thrown over his shoulders as Meatball clambered atop his throne to accept a key to the city, a bouquet of flowers and a doggie cake, which he quickly began licking.
“We’re shocked and really excited that he won,” Ryan Anderson, who owns Meatball with his wife, Kati, told Drake University News.
Meatball apparently possesses just the perfect combination of drooling ugliness and a bleary-eyed hung-over look.
“For me, the bulldog is the ugliest thing I can put my hands on. He’s got to have bloodshot eyes. The right kind of bloodshot eyes, like on a Friday night after you’ve been out socializing,” Dolph Pulliam, the master of ceremonies for the event, told the Associated Press. “He’s got to have that drooling look on his face, and then a little slobber coming down. That is the most beautiful bulldog to me in the whole wide world.”
