Phillips de Pury & Company’s Sex auction in London on March 19 features 221 nudes and sex-related works by artists ranging from Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse to Andy Warhol and Takashi Murakami, among a who’s who of contemporary artists and photographers (see separate entry on the photography works for sale in the Sex auction).
This auction at Phillips de Pury & Company will advance the conversation on contemporary art, sexuality and the interplay between them in presenting works that challenge our concepts of desirability, gender and the way we consume sexual imagery.
The Matisse nude – Figure endormie, châle sur les Jambes, 1929 – is estimated at £7,000-9,000. Four cartoonish Picasso drawings are featured in the auction, with the highest estimate (£4,000-5,000) going to his Raphael et la Fornarina. VII: Le Pape est là assis, 1968 etching on wove paper. Of the three Warhol works, his 1977 Torso silkscreen on vellum paper has the highest estimate (£40,000-60,000). The highest estimate in the auction catalog goes to Jack Pierson’s “Sex” (see slideshow below), valued at £60,000-80,000.
