Mattel, Inc., Lionsgate® and AMC Announce Launch of “Mad Men” Barbie Collector Dolls
The big buzz on Twitter today – in fact a “trending topic” for a while – revolved around the new Mad Men Barbie dolls as Mattel, Inc., Lionsgate® and AMC today announced the launch of four Barbie Collector “Mad Men” dolls which will be available in July 2010. Designed by one of Barbie’s most popular designers, Robert Best, the “Mad Men” Barbie doll line features lead characters from the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency: creative director and leading man Don Draper; his wife Betty Draper; Sterling Cooper partner Roger Sterling; and office manager Joan Holloway.
“Mad Men” is the television series about advertising in the 1960s which chronicles the lives of the men and women of Madison Avenue advertising of that era. According to a Mattel press release, the “Mad Men” Barbie Collector doll collection will embody “the ‘Mad Men’ series’ couture fashions and accessories, and its iconic 1960s style and aesthetic.”
The “Mad Men” dolls will be the first licensed doll line in the Barbie Fashion Model Collection, a Barbie Silkstone collection known for quality fashions, accessories and now pop-culture tributes and adultry. Two of the new Barbie dolls represent a relationship outside wedlock which is a departure from Barbie’s normally clean image. The Silkstone line of Barbie dolls features a resin material that resembles the look and weight of porcelain. The line also features the vintage face molds for Barbie and Ken. The “Mad Men” Silkstone Barbie dolls will have a suggested retail price of $74.95 each.
You can get a collectible sketch drawings of the “Mad Men” Barbie Collector dolls by buying the Mad Men: Season 3 DVD when it hits stores on March 23, 2010 – each DVD set will include one of the four character sketches as well as all 13 episodes of the season.
“I have never seen ‘Mad Men,’ but those dolls are very pretty,” says Shelby D. in Nahville. “It’s too bad Mattel is no longer sticking to good role models, though.”
“Joan’s hair is perfect but a black outfit? I remember her in jewel tones: tomato, violet, and emerald,” comments Cheri A. in Middle Tennessee.
