Survived tax day? Thoughts of spring? Wondering what the next great beer event in and around Ann Arbor might be? Look no further.
The single biggest event that craft beer enthusiasts should set their sights on is the Michigan Brewers Guild 13th Annual Summer Beer Festival. It’s right in Ypsilanti, just a few minutes outside of Ann Arbor, and promises to be spectacular. Although the festival is not until July 23 & 24, tickets go on sale May 1. As with most MBG beer fests, tickets should be available through local brewpubs, but you’ll also be able to get them at the Michigan Brewers Guild website.
Folks, MBG runs amazing festivals. The breweries turn out in droves and bring very special beers, the crowds are terrific, and the summer beer festival promises to be a good time. And remember, the fests often sell out, so don’t wait too long to get a ticket! I’ll post more info as it becomes available.
Local brewpubs have teamed up to host a pub crawl for their mug club members on May 12, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Mug club members of Arbor Brewing, Blue Tractor, Grizzly Peak, and Jolly Pumpkin (any one will do; no need to join all four, though I’m sure the brewpubs would love it) will enjoy beer samples and appetizers at each brewpub, and brewers will be available to discuss the beer and answer questions. Details are available here. Tickets are $40 and available only to mug club members.
Grizzly Peak has a couple of special beers on tap: Franco-Belgian-style farmhouse ale in the Den and a strong Scottish-style ale as well. For the rest of April, they have their Burger and Brew promotion going on: a pint of beer is included in the price of a burger Sunday through Thursday nights. They are also offering a free kids meal with the purchase of two adult entrees with the coupon available here.
Arbor Brewing Co. and the ABC Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti have a bunch of events and offerings of interest. At the Corner, they are releasing Green Giant organic Imperial Pilsner in honor of Earth Day on April 22. The release party is 6:00-8:00 p.m., free to mug club members and $10 for others. At this event, they are kicking off their Green Brewery Club. Membership has several benefits, and the proceeds will go toward supporting a project to develop a green brewery plan for the Corner. Details here.
Also at the Corner, Strawberry Blonde ale will be released at a party from 6:00-8:00 on May 4. Again, free to mug club members, $10 to others. Appetizers will be served. It’s a rite of spring.
Arbor Brewing has teamed with Washtenaw Community College LifeLong Learning to put on a number of beer-related classes. Details are available here, and advance registration is required. Offerings range from various beer tasting classes to classes on introductory and advanced home brewing.
The next monthly beer tasting at Arbor Brewing will be on May 13, 7:00-9:00, and will focus on bock and Trappist beers. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door and are available at the pub or by calling 734-213-1393. Be warned: these events often sell out, so there may well be no tickets available at the door. Tastings include loads of samples, an appetizer buffet, and tasting notes. They are a great way to learn about these beers and connect with fellow craft beer lovers.
