Women’s History Month has been celebrated annually in the month of March for almost 30 years. This month long event was initially only a week long and originated in California in 1978. The purpose of the first celebration was to increase awareness of women’s history and honor their contributions to our society. The California idea grew in popularity and spread throughout numerous organizations, schools and communities across the United States, prompting the U.S. Congress to officially pass a resolution to establish Women’s History Week in 1981. This event expanded into a month long celebration six years later and is now celebrated throughout the United States.
Women’s History Month highlights the numerous accomplishments of women and their impact on history – focusing more on “her-story”. There was a great need to acknowledge and highlight women’s contributions to culture and history. The Women’s History Guide focuses on women’s history all year around and provides valuable information about notable and ordinary women.
In Atlanta, there are many activities scheduled throughout the month of March that highlight the beauty, knowledge and history of women. Whether you decide to attend one event or ten events, please mark your calendars for these empowering celebrations. Don’t miss an opportunity to enhance your appreciation and show your support of women’s history!
