So many homeschoolers want to inculcate biblical knowledge into their children, and to make devotions and scripture memorization a significant part of their curriculum. Most Christian homeschoolers are pros at reading bible stories and reviewing memory verses, but when it comes to interesting and creative ways to help children learn about the bible, sometimes parents come up dry. Fortunately, one wonderful curriculum option for having fun while learning about God’s word is the Kids’ Bible Challenge Game by David C Cook.
This wonderful board game is marketed as ideal for ages 6-12, although I have used it with my 4 year old, and she loves it. The board is simply a path with spaces that are marked with icons which represent 6 different categories: Old Testament, New Testament, Places, Objects and Events, Numbers, and General. The objects of the game is to be the first player (or team) to move from Start (Genesis) to Finish (Revelation). 2-4 players put their colored markers on the board, and then roll the die to see how many spaces to advance. The player then answers a question from the category that is represented from the icon on the space on which he has landed. For example, if the player lands on the space with the rainbow icon, he will answer a question about biblical Objects and Events. There are 600 bible questions included in the game, with 6 questions on each card. The answers to each question are on the opposite side of the card. If the answer given is correct, the player may continue their turn by rolling the die and answering the next question. When the player gets an answer incorrect, the turn moves to the next player.
Although these are the instructions for traditional play, this game can be adapted as necessary to suit the learning needs of your children. For example, when I play with my four-year-old, each player simply gets one turn (regardless of whether the answer is correct or incorrect), and if a player cannot answer the question, other players help her answer. Questions include: “Which apostle had a thorn in his flesh?”, “What happened to the walls of Jericho?”, “Who did the apostles preach about?”, “How many of each unclean beast did Noah take into the ark?”, “What did Jesus say there were many of in His Father’s house?” “What Old Testament person was a judge, a priest, and a prophet?” and “How many trees were Adam and Eve forbidden to eat from?”. There are questions simple enough for the youngest learners, as well as more challenging ones for older players.
The Kids’ Bible Challenge game only costs about $10, and can be ordered online here or obtained locally at the Lifeway Christian Store near Valley View Mall at 4873 Valley View Boulevard Northwest. If you’re looking for a fun way to bring biblical knowledge into your home, the Kids’ Bible Challenge is just the ticket. As a supplement to your devotional curriculum and scripture memorization, this game will bring a new level of excitement and interest to learning about God’s word.
