Newly appointed DCPS Director of Food Service Jeff Mills will discuss his plans for addressing unhealthy eating in D.C. schools, along with other panelists during the “Food for Thought” event tomorrow, April 22nd from 6pm to 8.30pm at Ward 8 Parent and Family Resource Center, located in M.C. Terrell Elementary School.
This event is part of Georgetown University’s public awareness campaign, What’s In Your Kids Food?, aimed to motivate parents to raise healthy children. Other panelists will include Coy Dunston, owner of Secrets of Nature Health Foods, nutritionist and author Tracye McQuirter, and local child health advocate Betsy Calloway.
No, this is not a dull, “you sit, we talk” session but an interactive two-and-a-half hours with clips of Food, Inc., questions and answer session, and a healthy cooking demonstration. Another great aspect of the event is that their information is hyper-localized, not a broad overview of national statistics. The discussion can be for everyone, not just children. It’s difficult to keep up with nutritional studies and information and this is one way to open your eyes and close your stomach, if only a bit.
