No doubt things are bad in Birmingham.

A three billion dollar financial fiasco that has no solution to date.
Impending increases in electric and water rates.
Lower house building than last year or last month.
The mayor has gone a begging to Washington for money to operate a constantly failing mass transit system.
The state is not in that great a shape either.
Proration of schools is a certainty.
The state has to borrow money from the federal government to pay unemployment compensation.
Purportedly “moral convictions” about bingo have hamstrung the latest session of the legislature.
There will be no money left to pay for PACT promises for college education in 2010.
The federal government is not doing so well either.
Insurance companies are funding both Republican and Democrat campaigns to stall or kill insurance reform.
Social Security will be calling in the paper from the federal government this year. Paper that has no financial backing.
Great expectations from new and old leadership has yet to materialize.
People often hearken back to the great words of the past for inspiration or cling to the hope that “leadership” of a new brand or concept will solve all their problems.
Perhaps it is best to look to nature for our examples. Endurance in difficult times is a hallmark of the natural world.
The slide show on my Facebook page shows examples of non thinking (as far as we know) beings who have lived and thrived on the brink of disaster for decades.
No leaders inspired these hardy individuals. These old boys and girls thrived on their own by taking what they had to work with and making their best efforts in precarious situations.
These creatures seem to have a natural instinct to understand words that take men eons to conceive let alone implement.
These bastions of resilience and determination never read nor spoke great speeches nor did they receive any assistance. Yet they thrive in adversity without complaint.
We as Alabamians and citizens of the United States need to recover the force of the individual and repudiate the falsity of leadership as a solution. Individual effort will solve our problems not leadership or the lack of it.
The behavior is based on sun seeking but biologists I consulted have no explanation other than the will to live and do well.
