Hotel Cafe received the Charlie Award for Music Arts Award on Friday, March 19th. Singer/ Actress Julie Brown presented the honor to the club. A promotional video ran of the club which showed the co-owner Marko Shafer talking about the club and it dedication to the city of Hollywood. “It is not a hotel or cafe” noted Brown who said it look like a good place to hang out. Tera Uhlinger, the Production Manager of the club accepted the award for the club. Uhlinger noted that the owner were at the SWSX Festival this weekend and was sorry they could not attend to pick up the award.
The Hotel Cafe has been in Hollywood since opening by co owners Marko Shafer and Max Mamikuniam in 2000. This club gives the local, up and coming or established musicians a chance to perform live in an intimate setting. The club has driven national recording artists to come to play there because of it’s excellent sound and equipment and a comfortable feel of the setting.
Artists like John Mayer, Butch Walker, Pink, Vanessa Carlton, Sara Bareilles, Billy Corigan of The Smashing Pumpkins and Dave Navarro are among many who have performed on the stage.
The club was the setting for Butch Walker filmed his video for his song “BethAmphetamine” which featured Avril Lavigne.
In addition to it’s many local patrons, celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan, Adam Lambert and Kim Kardashian have sat in the audience to see live shows.
The Hotel Cafe is open 7 nights a week and is located at 1623 1/2 N. Cahuenga.
The Charlie Awards were by ABC7’s George Pennacchio emceed the event which with celebrity guests
presented awards to individuals and companies for significant contributions to the arts and Hollywood. This year’s Charlie Awards honorees also included: Artist June Wayne (Visual Arts); JAG/ROTO
architecture (Architectural Arts); Madame Tussauds Hollywood (Entertainment Arts); Thai New Year Festival (Cultural Arts); Chaz Dean Studio (Preservation Arts) and Theatre of NOTE (Theatre Arts). The Annual Charlie Awards help support Project S.O.A.R. (Students Overcoming All Risks), the Hollywood Arts Council’s After School Art Workshops held in eight Hollywood area elementary schools, and its Annual Children’s Festival of the Arts.
