The saga continues as all three Northwest Indiana high school basketball teams win their semistate games and advance to the state championship . Just last week the class 3A Lew Wallace Hornets, Class A Thea Bowman Eagles, and Class 2A Wheeler Bearcats made history when they all won their regional games, and made it the first time that this region had sent three teams to the semistate tournament under the current IHSAA system. Now this week, history continues to be made as they all win and will play for the state title in their respective classes next week.
Bowman Academy, which has only been in the Indiana High School Athletic Association for three years, advances with an 89-79 win over Monroe Central on Saturday. They were led by Christopher Bond with 23 points.
Lew Wallace punched their ticket to the championship by defeating Fort Wayne Elmhurst 57-47. Local superstar Branden Dawson, who is ranked No. 16 in the nation on Rivals.com, led the Hornets with 24 points and 14 rebounds.
Andrew Rudakas scored 23 points to lead Wheeler to a 68-61 victory over Southwood. Southwood was playing without their leading scorer Grant Keaffaber, due to academics, but still made it tough for the Bearcats.
Representing Gary (Lew Wallace, Bowman) and Valparaiso (Wheeler) in Northwest Indiana, all three teams have a legitimate chance at winning the state championship. All three teams have a shot at immortality, doing something that has never been done and will never be forgotten.
