If you are on the eastside of Madison and looking to grab a bite to eat and enjoy the scenery, a great place to check out is Pat O’Malley’s Jet Room. While the address for the Jet Room is technically 3606 Corben Court it is more accurate to say it is on the grounds of the Dane County Regional Airport. To get there, take Highway 51 North past where you would turn to go to the airport and then turn left into the airport grounds on Amelia Earhart Drive and then left onto Corben Court.
Located in the Wisconsin Aviation building, the Jet Room faces the airport’s runways and the entire back wall is floor to ceiling windows. If you stop in during a slow time, you may be lucky enough to be seated at one of the dozen or so tables overlooking the runways.
In 1977, Pat O’Malley opened the original Jet Room in the old stone building, which served as the Madison Airport main terminal building decades ago. When that building was razed to make room for the new Wisconsin Aviation building, the Jet Room got its new digs, also. As you would expect, the décor of the Jet Room is heavily aviation themed topped off with chrome and glass.
On a recent Saturday after a stop at the Glacier’s Edge Boy Scout store, this Working Mom and her children stopped by for a late lunch and were treated to quite a bit of aviation activity, as well as some fairly good sandwiches at very reasonable prices.
The menu relies heavily on aviation terms to describe various items such as the ‘Tower’ing Salads and the Chef’s ‘Approach’ Salad, as well as ‘Soaring’ Sandwiches and the ‘Flying Fortress’, a chicken breast sandwich, which Elizabeth ordered. The Jet Setters Barnstormin’ Breakfasts competed with Jet Room Specialties, affectionately nicknamed “Benny & The Jets”, which were several variations on eggs benedict for breakfast choices. All were reasonably priced. The sandwiches included a choice of fries, potato chips, pasta salad or hot chips.
With menu choices, such as these, a clean and fun environment and a friendly and welcoming staff, chances are this Working Mom and her family will make another layover at the Jet Room!
Be sure to check out the attached slideshow for more pictures of the view from the Jet Room.
