Huber Heights OH – March 21, 2010
When you’re on skates with the Gem City Rollergirls, it can seem as if the whole world is against you.
In truth, it’s just the other team that’s against you and roller derby is not the scripted, showy stuff some of us grew up with.
On WDTN’s Bucher’s Beat last fall, as their 2009 season was drawing to a close, Hillary Groom (aka Godzillary) explained “They knew they were getting hit, then, and it was kind of orchestrated. Now you have no idea, it’s much more sport oriented.”
Sure, they have performance names like Punky Rooster, Misti Fisti, Angry Ann and Glenda the Good Wench, but as they start their fifth season today remember that’s all for show. They eat pizza just like everyone else. (Don’t believe us? They’ll be at C’s around the corner after the bout.)
To some, it may appear that they just skate around, so Groom, who is starting her third season with the Gem City Rollergirls today, talked about how they score.
“You got four girls from each team which are blockers that skate in a pack. Then you have a jammer going through the pack; and every person that jammer passes legally in bounds you get a point for.”
During the off season, besides keeping in shape and skating practice, the girls did some promotion, including sponsoring a party at Club Vex in downtown Dayton, and an appearance at a Dayton Gems Hockey game.
The Gem City Rollergirls have a new home base this season, too.
All skating is now at the Orbit Fun Center, 5001 Nebraska Avenue in Huber Heights.
Tickets for today’s season opening scrimmage against the OHRG’s Gang Green are $5.00 for adults and children 13 and over. Children 12 and under are free with paying adult.
Doors open at 4:30, and the bout starts about 5pm.
