In the article “To Get Things Done”, I wrote about my relationship to God and how that works itself out in my life. But the basis for that relationship is more about what God has done for me through the Lord Jesus. In fact, Scripture states that “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works,so that no one can boast.” See the quote below from Ephesians 2:4-9.
Yes, God desires our obedience, but he still loves us even before we accept His great love. “when we were dead in transgressions” as the Apostle Paul wrote, both in Romans and in Ephesians.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions– it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast. (Eph 2:4-9 NIV)
Praise the Lord! The basis of my relationship with God is what He has done. Yes, I have accepted His “free gift” (See Romans 5:15-18). However, it was provided at a great cost. The Lord Jesus Christ had to die for it to be given.
But I have digressed from my main point. We do good works, yes, but it is because God has already saved us, not in order for us to earn salvation. See Eph 2:10, For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)
That’s a big thought!
