First pop singer Beyonce defended her appearance in Lady Gaga‘s “Telephone” video, now Gaga herself is speaking out on the backlash she’s received from the groundbreaking mini-movie.
Fans (a.k.a. Little Monsters) of the “Bad Romance” singer have praised Gaga for taking music videos creatively in a new direction, many groups are upset with the video’s underlying themes of murder and lesbianism.
In response to the negative criticism, Gaga recently told press:
“There are transsexual women and transgender women and suddenly it becomes poisonous and something else because there are some people in this world that believe being gay is a choice. It’s not a choice, we’re born this way. That’s why for me this video is groundbreaking because it has one foot in the art community and one foot in the commercial world.
I told Beyonce this after it aired, you’ll see this video is not just great now but six months from now what this video will mean. Hearing people say the video is sadomasochistic or that the video promotes murder for young people, it’s my personal belief that the video is getting so much attention, not because of those themes because I’ve done those themes before, haven’t I?
There are no rules or limits when it comes to love. But I see love as separate from sex.”
As previously reported, Beyonce told Los Angeles radio station Power 106, “It’s meant to change the perspective of the world on what a pop music video should be and she’s kind of the vehicle for that…..” (See: Beyonce defends Lady Gaga’s Telephone video to LA’s Power 106)
On Monday (March 15) Gaga thanked fans for their supported via Twitter. She tweeted, “‘Telephone’ made history today, little monsters! Thank you for all your support of the video, you are the future, you are the kings and queens.”
According to MTV.com, Gaga and “Telephone” collaborator Beyoncé reached a milestone together:
“The single reached #1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart, becoming both singers’ sixth #1 single — a tie with Mariah Carey’s record.”
