Recently, childhood obesity has become again the hot topic. With recent studies showing even American preschool children are now more obese than ever, this blog could not come at a better time. It is amazing, informative and a little scary to read. In this blog a teacher has challenged herself to eat “school lunch” every day in 2010. Fed Up With School Lunch is a must read for any parent with a child in public school in America.
In this blog, an anonymous teacher writes on her experiences, reactions, and tummy issues that all come with eating school lunch for one whole year. When you see the pictures of her daily lunch and hear about the often less than appetizing lunch time fare, you can’t help admiring her for taking a stand and risking her own job to make someone listen. She also features guest bloggers, including those from other countries which really shows you just how horrible we feed our kids.
Could schools do better?
When you browse the pictures of this poor teachers daily lunch, you cannot wonder “what do the kids think?” The meals are less than appetizing and really are not creative. Compared to the meals served to children in other countries (check out posts on her blog for pictures and notes from educators in other countries), it seems that our schools are not even close to what they offer or teach children about nutrition. Although school lunches must follow guidelines for nutrition, you wonder why children are not offered items like salad, casseroles that contain meat and vegetables or yogurt instead of over cooked lasagna and “limp” steamed carrots.
Who will take action?
First Lady Michelle Obama is trying to tackle this problem head on by talking directly to grocery and food manufactures across the country. Her goal is to create more healthy and active children. Although many have said that the topic should have gotten more attention before now, others say that they did not realize just what it was public school children were fed and just how little they actually get to “move” during the day. This seems crazy since the topic has been long debated and discussed by educators, parents and nutritionists.
Currently the Children’s Nutrition Act and National School Lunch Program is being discussed in Congress.
Although it is clearly understood that with so many families falling at or below the poverty line in our country, kids are simply just taking what they can get. Does that mean that what they get has to be “not so great?” If it is true that for some children this is the only “complete meal” they get each day, shouldn’t it be not only more appetizing but a whole lot more balanced with fresh fruits and vegetables?
Chef Jamie Oliver also has based his new show which airs on ABC on the current nutritional trends that are affecting our children. Oliver’s show goes to schools and takes a hands on approach to teaching staff, administrators, families and children about nutrition and just what they are putting into their bodies.
Why you should read this Blog
This blog is not only educational, it is just plain scary. Although many parents rely on school lunches for their children’s nutrition, you wonder after seeing some of the pictures, if children are really even eating all of the meal they are provided. Not only are they unappetizing, they appear to be over cooked and over steamed which research shows strips foods like vegetables of many of their nutrients. Many say that children are fed hot dogs, burgers and pizza as part of their school lunch because they won’t eat anything else. How do you know what they will eat if you have not offered it too them?
When schools across the country are seeing the loss of teachers jobs, funding cut for sports, the arts and other programs, and even a reduction of school days because of cut-backs it makes you wonder just how bad it will all get before someone puts their foot down and takes a stand. How many more “Fed Up With School Lunch” sites will pop up before changes are made?
