To celebrate online individualism, each day this week I’ll be featuring a Fargo regional native and their Etsy shop. Today’s feature is Miranda Olson of MirandaStamps. Miranda lives with her husband in Fargo, North Dakota and works full-time. Rubber stamping is her hobby and her ‘getaway’ from the stress of real life. ‘I love having a hobby that is self-supporting!’
Couldn’t agree more, Miranda! Etsy is fast becoming an outlet for many artists to let their creative juices flow. Making money to support their habits and supplement their income seems to be a very fortunate side effect.
Miranda sells handmade greeting cards and paper crafts. Each item is rubber stamped and embellished with either ribbon, decorative papers, metal brads, or other accent items.
I had Miranda answer the following interview questions by email:
How did you get started making and selling your product?
I have been a Rubber Stamper for over 16 years. My collection of stamps has grown over the years as I mostly made cards for personal use, including my wedding invitations, programs, and Thank You cards. In the summer of 2007, I sold my cards as a fundraiser and received requests to make more. I continued selling cards to friends so I could make more cards. I started my MirandaStamps on Etsy in 2008.
What do you like most about selling online?
I love the fact that I can reach people all over the world with the Internet. Friends and family that live far away can also shop online to buy cards or get new ideas for their own crafts.
What do you like least?
I miss seeing people face to face and meeting new friends. I like getting to know my customers so I can create items I think they would like. The Internet limits the personal contact that helps do just that.
What word of advice do you have for our readers interested in selling their products online?
Be professional. If you take yourself seriously, others will too.
Be prepared. Have items made up and ready to be mailed out.
Be honest. Custom made items are are very special and customers need to be aware when there will be a wait time.
Thanks Miranda! Sage advice for the beginning online entrepreneur.
