HiWay Baptist Church, located in Northeast Mesa on Brown Road between Crismon and Signal Butte Roads, has started a ministry for the deaf and hearing impaired.
Heading up the program is Jeremy Fass, a member of HiWay Baptist.
“We have had a good turnout since we started. We have been running between 12-15 (including kids) on Sunday nights for our 5pm Bible Study, and about 10 on Wednesday nights.” says Jeremy.
HiWay has a donation only dinner on Wednesday nights starting at 6pm, and usually has between 80-120 in attendance.
Ray Dean, a deacon at Hiway, says that it is a good ministry, because it shows us we can minister to all who come through the doors.
“This ministry has really opened my eyes to the deaf culture. It is also challenging because of the ‘language’ barrier. I have learned a lot of sign language in the past couple of months.”
Pastor George Barnes likes the program. “It is another ministry and outreach to the community, where we can spread the Word of God even to those who cannot physically hear. They can spiritually ‘hear’ the message. They have an opportunity to become a part of the family of God.”
