This Friday night, before the weekend’s Stumptown Comics Fest, The Secret Society Ballroom & Recording Studio will play host to Drink & Draw Like A Lady, a gathering of women in the comics world. Although historically an industry dominated by men, comic books are slowly becoming an equal playing field thanks to events like Drink & Draw Like A Lady. Organized by comic artist Hope Larson and funded primarily through sales of Larson’s original art, DDLL is an occasion for women in the comics world to network and share ideas and sketches.
Not limited to writers and artists alone, DDLL is open to all women involved with comics, whether it be through editing, lettering, selling or even studying them. Drink & Draw Like A Lady East was a rousing success, held the Friday before the 2010 MoCCA Art Fest, and Portland’s western version is certain to measure up, with the amazing amount of talented women here. Additional thanks are due to Dylan Meconis for arranging the West Coast event.
Women of all ages are welcome to attend and enjoy the company of fellow comic-lovers before the weekend’s Fest. The Secret Society is located at 116 NE Russell St, and the action lasts from 7:30 until midnight.
