Being chronically late can cause conflicts. Still, should Dr. Phil propose that not showering is the answer? One DC office held its nose and unanimously vetoed this advice.
Dr. Phil’s website has some very sound advice about how to break the habit of showing up late. It talks about taking into account your impact on the people you keep waiting. It also describes how to establish better priorities. However, it concludes with a bizarre suggestion to stop taking showers on a daily basis.
We were rooting for Dr. Phil when he started out encouraging people to give themselves a penalty for being late. We just expected him to suggest giving up reality TV shows or non-emergency phone calls. Instead, taking a shower was the first item on his list. Giving up combing your hair was second on his list, and that does sound a little suspicious coming from a bald man.
Your co-workers and friends may resent you for showing up late. Still, on a hot day in August in DC, being tardy is better than being unwashed.
