The swallows return to Capistrano today but that isn’t what this article is about at all because…well, you know why…
Let’s concentrate on the seedy places we love to hole up in, when we are just not in the mood to be around tourists or the throngs.
Locust Point Tavern – no website and not a lot of online mentions, this little place is located at 1515 East Clement Street. Expect cold beer and lots of characters.
Idle Hour – with events like BYOV (bring your own vinyl – for the DJ) and First Saturdays wine tastings, this may not be the hole you expect, but it’s a nice to place just hang out and drink. Find this great dive at 201 East Fort Avenue in South Baltimore (no, it’s not Federal Hill, thank goodness).
Rendezvous – at 136 West 25th in Remington, this place is not for the faint of heart. A jukebox, friendly bartender and a really mixed clientele are what make this place so special. Pick up a game of pool while you’re here.
The Dizz – another Remington joint, The Dizz now serves breakfast and opens weekdays at 10 AM and weekends at 8 AM and stays open until 2 AM also has a complete, really nice looking menu. There’s been a bar in this place since 1934 so it’s no wonder why it’s just a great dive.
Spirits – in Upper Fell’s Point: this is a bar you’ve got to hit when you are hoping for invisibility. Known by many names, about 20 years I knew it at The Dead Rabbit, while no sign actually said that. At 1901 Bank Street, Spirits lives up to its name serving good drinks at moderate prices.
American Harry’s – located at 623 South Luzurne in upper Canton. (is that even a place?). Seriously one of the greatest dive bars, chicken fingers and great burgers and ridiculously cheap drinks add to the already amazing dive-ness this place exudes.
Canton Liquor House – find this at 1822 Fleet Street, which surprisingly, isn’t even IN Canton, but Fell’s Point. Clean bar with great owners and on the last visit, they had cheese balls (you know, the kind from the can!). Look no further for a really nice place to drink.
Butts and Betty’s is just the perfect way to end this column. Located in Butcher’s Hill at 2200 Gough Street, visit this place to get bar food and cheap drinks starting at 6 AM – yes, 6 AM and they are open until 2 AM.
Oh and please don’t tell any of these places you read about it online. It will ruin the mystery and dive-ability of their aura.
