As part of our series of weekend projects, today we will examine installing a garden structure. A garden structure can be anything as simple as a unique boulder or rock, to the more complex arbor or trellis.
Installing one of these items in your landscape does a lot to create interest in addition to being a focal point from which to build upon. For instance, place a birdbath in the middle of your backyard and it will seem lost, but use it as an anchor, and create a landscape bed around it with perennials or bird attracting plants and you’ve got a genuine mini bird sanctuary! This doesn’t take much more effort than selecting your favorite birdbath and lugging it to that spot.
When selecting a location for your desired structure, choose one that will add to the balance of other objects in your yard while at the same time not seeming isolated. For example, say you have a large tree in your backyard, a good place for a boulder and some accent plants would be opposite the tree but not so far apart that you couldn’t see both in your field of view when you enter.
The perfect spot for an arbor is of course framing a walkway or entry point, or with a bench beneath it in a private corner.
The rule of thumb when it comes to structures is less is more. It’s easy to get carried away with so many different items available like garden orbs, solar powered lights, fountains, statues and a myriad of other ornamentation. After all you, you want to people to look at your house out of admiration, not as a local tourist attraction!
You may have to do a little digging, but this project goes from conception to yard in a matter of hours and gives you instant results and enjoyment.
