“Run Like a Mother: How to Get Moving–and Not Lose Your Job, Family, or Sanity,” hits bookstores on Tuesday, March 23. Denver author, runner, and mom Dimity McDowell is now on a “reading and running” tour to promote it.
“There’s definitely a really strong trend for moms getting out there and getting active,” McDowell told me in an interview last week.
McDowell and co-author Sarah Bowen Shea are currently traveling the country encouraging fellow moms to get fit and active together.
Three-years-ago McDowell and Bowen Shea were hired by Runner’s World to write about the 2007 Nike Women’s Marathon. Their blog about their training and the subsequent article in Runner’s World, were a huge hit with running moms all over the country.
“People identify with Sara and I because we’re in the same life situations,” McDowell said. People started to recognize the two women at races, and McDowell and Bowen Shea soon realized they had enough material for a book.
“Run Like a Mother” offers personal stories, advice, and humorous anecdotes for moms who run. And of course, like a marathon, it’s 26.2 chapters long.
McDowell hopes her book will encourage more moms to find a running partner and get active adding, “Having a running friend is so vital to success. The miles go by so much quicker.”
McDowell will be at Denver ‘s Tattered Cover bookstore on Friday, April 16th, to read an excerpt and sign copies of the book. She hopes to organize on non-competitive group run for Denver area moms on Saturday morning, April 20.
“Our goal is to create a supportive, structured community where running moms can meet,” said McDowell. “It’s not just about getting your miles in,” said McDowell. “It’s about taking time for yourself. It’s about setting a goal for yourself. It’s about community.”
McDowell moved to Denver from Colorado Springs last year. Her favorite places to run in the city so far, the High Line Canal and around the Cherry Creek reservoir.
