‘Dancing With the Stars’ – will Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysecek win? – There’s a good track record of Olympic gold medalists winning the ABC dance competition, Dancing With the Stars. Speed skater, Apolo Anton Ohno, won Season 4 in 2007. Figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi won Season 6 in 2008. Will the 24-year-old gold medalist figure skater from the 2010 Vancouver Olympics make it a triple crown?
The professional pair-ups may play a role. Lysecek is paired with professional, Anna Trebunskaya. Her previous partners on the show have included Jerry Rice, Chuck Liddell, Albert Reed, and Steve Guttenberg. She has never taken home the ballroom trophy. Will Lysecek’s power and sharpness from the recent Olympic competition and the natural dance qualifications of figure skating help them take it away?
When Mr. Ohno won, he was paired with pro favorite, Julianne Hough who is no longer with Dancing With the Stars. Ms. Hough left the show to pursue a career as a country singer, but not before she took home the ballroom trophy twice. Ms. Yamaguchi danced Mark Ballas, who is also now a two-time DWTS champion, helping Olympian Shawn Johnson go for the top spot in Season 8.
One thing Olympic athletes bring to the dance floor besides their top physical condition is a strong work ethic and training regimen, even though dancing may be quite different from their sport. Mr. Lysacek recently posted to his Twitter account, “So sore from training my dance moves today. It’s a lot harder than I thought. My partner Anna is awesome. We’re having a blast.” The athlete has had a busy few weeks since the Olympic games, going on a press tour that has included appearances on The View, Ellen, Bonnie Hunt, and other television shows and also attending the Vanity Fair and Dreamworks Oscar parties.
The final preparations are taking place before show time. Mr. Lysacek tweeted Saturday, “Had a great training day! It was our last real practice before the big day… Tomorrow is just camera blocking and stuff.”
The new season of Dancing With the Stars kicks off with a 2-hour premiere on ABC Monday night at 8:00 p.m. ET.
