Alyssa Lenhoff, estranged wife of former Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann, is the latest of many involved with Dann’s short tenure as AG to be charged with a crime.
Lenhoff, who could have faced a fourth degree felony, is expected to plead guilty to a misdemeanor count of Having an unlawful interest in a public contract at her April 26, 2010 court appearance.
Ethics Commission Executive Director David Freel advised that Lenhoff is cooperating with the investigation. But where is the investigation leading?
Dann received a slap on the wrist and a fine for misusing close to $45,000.00 in campaign contributions to update his home and pay personal bills, as well as a family vacation.
Dann’s defense to these charges was, “The choice I made was not to use taxpayer funds, but to use campaign funds.” Quite noble.
Four other employees of the AG’s office under Dann, including United Food and Commercial Workers union thug Leo Jennings, have been convicted of various ethics related charges.
Questions were also raised regarding his endorsement of Capri Cafaro to fill his vacated seat in the Ohio Senate. Cafaro’s father, J.J. Cafaro plead guilty to bribery and perjury during the investigation of Congressman Jim Traficant. Cafaro was convicted of bribery in order to secure a federal contract for his company, USAerospace, LLC, which was run by Capri and Richard Detore. Capri was given immunity for her testimony in Detore’s federal bribery trial.
Cafaro was recently sentenced to jail for an causing a campaign worker to file false documents to mask a $10,000.00 donation to his daughter’s 2004 Senate campaign. Cafaro and his brother Anthony abruptly retired from the family business during this time.
Also recently sentenced was former Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Maureen Cronin, who failed to report an $18,000.00 “loan” received from Cafaro’s sister Flora, and former Trumbull County Commissioner Jim Tsagaris who took a $36,551.00 “loan” from a “local businessman”.
The investigation into Dann’s office, barring unknown circumstances, will be exposed by May 14, the last day charges can be filed due to statutory limitations.
Will this investigation prove to be another Democrat round-up, as were the prosecutions of the early 21st century in the Mahoning Valley? We’ll have that answer soon.
