I was pleased to hear that Governor Sean Parnell has instructed our attorney general Dan Sullivan to join 20 other states to overturn Obamacare. I believe the lawsuit has merit, and the federal government should not be mandating private citizens to purchase health insurance; in my opinion it is unconstitutional. I agree with the governor that this lawsuit is not about healthcare reform legislation. It’s about freedom.
I had the pleasure tonight to attend an event put on by the Institute of the North called “Constitutional Conversations.” These conversations are held in the Loussac Library, Ann Stevens’ room. The event is “fireside chat like,” conversation in an un-intimating environment. I do not know what exactly I was expecting. I have worked as a paralegal in my past, and have witnessed trials, badgering of each other and witnesses, and judges throwing attorneys under the bus. Therefore, imagine how intimidated I was to enter the room to hang out with some of the best legal minds.
I have a new appreciation of both the US and Alaska constitutions. It was interesting to find out that Alaska’s constitution goes even further in protecting our rights than the US constitution. I had no idea. Such thoughtfulness was given into crafting these sacred documents that protect our rights as citizens, and as a state. I was honored to sit with Victor Fisher who helped build our state and craft our constitution. Such respect and care went into building Alaska and protecting Alaskans freedoms. I disagree with Mr. Fisher politically. However, he is leader and a freedom loving Alaskan.
I have always had profound respect for the law and our US constitution. I was blown away at the conversations and how these legal minds interpret the law. I was the only conservative in the room filled with lawyers, judges, the ACLU and others. What I was most surprised by was their respect for me and my opinion that the only role of government is to protect me. I was even on board with the ACLU and others on rehabilitation as a responsibility.. Who knew? It’s in Alaska’s constitution.
The governor has been mindful in approaching this litigation with the federal government. He will be litigating shoulder to shoulder with other governors around the country protecting our freedoms. We live in the greatest country, and state in the world, and be thankful each and everyday that you do. Freedom is a beautiful thing.
