Though a brisk evening air swept through Starland Ballroom’s open side doors on Sunday night, making for a slightly colder experience than was probably expected from an indoor show, the chill didn’t last for long. As soon as the lights went down and Papa Roach (drummer Tony Palermo, bassist Tobin Esperance, guitarist Jerry Horton and vocalist Jacoby Shaddix) launched into “Getting Away With Murder”, fans piled on top of each other to get down front, and generated a heat that immediately warmed the whole place up.
Backed by a colorful, dynamic lightshow to accompany their driving, melodic hard rock, the California foursome plowed through a set full of hits spanning the last decade. Fans screamed along to hits off of CDs ranging from 2000’s Infest to their current CD Metamorphosis, such as “Between Angels and Insects”, “Last Resort”, “Forever”, “To Be Loved”, “Scars” and “Lifeline.” Shaddix commanded not only center stage, but the dark corners of the side stage, the back bars, and the top of the barricade rail, all the while strengthening the connection to his fans and raising the energy level even higher. Fans also caught a glimpse of Jacoby’s amateur karate moves, as he donned a bandana thrown onstage and and proceeded to give his best impression of fictional Jersey hero Daniel LaRusso right before kicking into “Dead Cell.”
Sunday’s show also marked the second time the group played new song “Burn” off the band’s upcoming live CD (the first being the day before at a gig in Richmond, VA, the first show back since winter of 09’s Shinedown tour). According to Jacoby Shaddix’s blog on paparoach.com, the CD will feature performances recorded live while on tour in the Fall/Winter of 2009 as well as 5 new tracks produced with David Bendeth (The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Breaking Benjamin, Paramore) to entice those who find themselves hesitant when it comes to purchasing live albums.
Papa Roach will be touring the US this Spring, playing clubs as well as a smattering of radio festivals across the nation. After that, they’ll be making their way around Europe. Upcoming dates can be found on the band’s official site as well as their MySpace.
